The main digester is where the biology works. Temperature, mixing and feeding decide how much gas the same substrate produces — the plant's central process, and the one that reacts slowest to any correction.

The scenario: The biology slowly turns sour after a change of substrate. Temperature and level stay in range the whole time, and the gas production falls so gradually that each single day looks like normal variation — until the recovery takes weeks.
The digester rewards steadiness. Recognising a drift while it is still small is the difference between an adjusted feeding plan and weeks of reduced output.
